Plynck Magic Item Creation and Enhancement

Off the Shelf

Sometimes items can be found immediately available at a local magic store.  Their cost is as per the DMG.  They are available immediately, with no necessary waiting time.

If an item is not available off the shelf, it may be possible to have it crafted by local magical craftsmen.  This will be true or not true on a case by case basis, based on the item in question and the region of Plynck.  Woodknife, for example is the premier area on this continent for magic, and almost anything can be found or made there.  Other regions do not have such a high concentration of magical craftsmen.  And of course the size of the town or city will have a bearing as well.

Comissioned Items

The following sections describe prices and durations for various types of magical items.

Weapons and Armor

Starting from either a Masterwork item, or an item already magically enhanced, the cost of adding new magicial abilities (e.g., plusses to hit, plusses to AC, special abilities) is calculated as per the DMG for the number of 'bonus'es involved.

For the same work, the duration -- the elapsed time from when the bonus(es) is (are) ordered until the item is ready -- is one week per new bonus.  Thus taking a sword from +1 to +3 Holy would require four weeks (Holy is +2 bonuses).

Potions

Potions cost are listed in the DMG for common magical potions.

Potions that are not listed in the DMG are, in general, not available unless the purchaser supplies the appropriate magical creature body part.

For potions that make use of a magical creature body part, the chart relating potions to creatures (and body parts) lists the total cost of the potion, as well as the discount available for bringing in that body part.

All potions require one day to brew.

Magical apothecaries can simultaneously brew a number of potions equal to their magical class level.

Scrolls

Scroll costs are listed in the DMG.

All scrolls require one day per spell level to inscribe.

Only one scroll can be inscribed per magic user per day.

A maximum of five spells can be inscribed on one scroll.

A maximum of fifteen spell levels can be inscribed on one scroll, summed across all the spells on that scroll.

Rings, Rods, Staffs, and Wands

All of these use the cost listed in the DMG.

The duration -- the elapsed time from when the item is ordered until it is ready -- is one week per 1,000gp (always round up) of the value of the item.
Craftsmen are willing to increase the priority of an item, for sufficient monetary recompence.  For each additional 2,000gp, they will knock one (1) week off of the duration, down to the minimum time for the item creation.
The minimum time for item creation is one day per 1,000gp (always round up) of the value of the item -- rounded up to the next full week.

For example, an item which would cost 10,200gp would require 11 weeks from commission to delivery.  If the character wishes, they can reduce this down to two weeks -- 11 days rounded up to two full weeks -- at an additional cost of 18,000gp (nine weeks difference times 2,000 per week).

Wonderous Items

For 'simple', single-power Wonderous Items, as described in the DMG, the cost is as per the DMG.

However, it is possible to overlay multiple powers on the same item.  This is especially useful when applied to items which are worn.  [Note that this discussion explicitly does not include Rings or Armor.]  To calculate the cost of having such items commissioned [they are almost never going to be found off the shelf], use the following steps:
a) add together all of the individual costs (per DMG) for the individual powers;
b) multiply this sum by 1.2;
c) subtract the original value of the object (if it already had a magical ability(s)).

There is a limit of three (3) powers being infused into any one object.

For example, if an item already had an ability worth 1,500gp, and it was desired to add abilities worth 4,000gp and 5,000gp to it, the cost would be:
(1,500 + 4,000 + 5,000) * 1.2 - 1,500 = (10,500)*1.2 - 1,500 = 12,600 - 1,500 = 11,100.
The duration would normally be 12 weeks, but could be reduced to a minimum of 2 weeks by paying an extra 20,000gp.

Items and Enhancements in Supplements

The 3.0 supplements are not generally available.  There are regions on Plynck where each supplement fits in with the regional character.  When the group is in such a region, the above calculations will also apply to any Items or Enhancements described in that supplement (depending, of course, on DM-determined availability).

Plynck standard magical items can be found in:
